A building on Butler’s Main Street is expected to begin demolition sometime before the end of August, city officials said.

The property, 123 S. Main St., is set to be transferred to the city after a court order required owner Chris Gatto to do so. City council approved demolition on July 23 at a cost of $102,855.

Mayor Bob Dandoy gave an update Tuesday, Aug. 18, during a City of Butler Land Bank board meeting. He said asbestos abatement was already underway and demolition was set to take place the week of Aug. 24.

“The first step is to do asbestos abatement. That takes about two to three days,” Dandoy said at the land bank meeting. “Then they will begin demolishing the building and that’s approximately one week.”

Dandoy said the building should be demolished by Sept. 4.

Dandoy said once the building is demolished and cleaned up, it will eventually be transferred to the city’s land bank. From there, it will be the land bank board’s responsibility to determine what’s next for the property.
