The FBI's Pittsburgh division issued a warning Wednesday stating that fraudulent requests for donations have been reported in the wake of the shooting at Tree of Life Synagogue that left 11 people dead.

As with all tragedies, it's wise to route donations to known organizations that won't be mispurposing the cash, the FBI advised.

“The FBI reminds the public to be alert and conduct due diligence before giving to anyone soliciting donations on behalf of the shooting victims,” a news release on the topic stated.

Fake requests for donations can come in the form of “emails, websites, door-to-door collections, mailings, telephone calls or text messages.”

Sometimes people will solicit using the names of organizations that are just slightly modified versions of real charity groups, the bureau advised.

Make donations directly to organizations rather than turning money over to some sort of intermediary promising to donate in your stead, the release said.

For those already familiar with the crowd-funding website GoFundMe.com, the site is running a verified donation drive with proceeds funneling directly into the synagogue. A link can be found on the company's home page.

The synagogue itself is also accepting digital donations on its website www.tolols.org. TOLOLS stands for Tree of Life Synagogue Or L'Simcha. The donation link is on the very top of the website.Donations can also be mailed to First National Bank of Pennsylvania, 1940 Murray Ave., Pittsburgh, Pa., 15217, to the attention of Tony North.The FBI advised making donations with either credit or debit cards or checks, rather than using cash. Don't make those checks payable to individuals, they warn, only charities or relevant organizations.
