CONCORD TWP — Firefighters were able to save a 2½-story farmhouse Wednesday night after a fire broke out in the home's chimney.

“It started as a chimney fire and made its way into the attic of the structure,' said Chief Reid Campbell of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department.

“We estimate it caused about $25,000 in damage.”

Campbell said the homeowners called 911 before escaping uninjured.

According to Campbell, a West Sunbury firefighter who lives nearby was first to respond to the 6:57 p.m. emergency call at 131 Green Lane and attempted to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher, but was unsuccessful.

West Sunbury firefighters, assisted by departments from North Washington and Marion Township, used tanker water pumped from a pond to battle the fire and hot spots for more than two and a half hours.

Campbell said the roof likely will need to be replaced, but damage to the lower two floors was limited to smoke and water damage.

He said the homeowners are insured.
