JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley Superintendent Tracy Vitale has outlined proposals that could help close the school district’s $4.8 million budget deficit for 2012-13.

She told the school board Monday night that everything is a proposal and do not represent final decisions.

Among her proposals are:

Eliminate 9.5 teacher positions in secondary education to save up to $636,000.

Not to fill two vacant teaching positions to save $198,000.

Eliminate three administrator positions as well as not filing another vacant position to save about $335,000.

Eliminate one paraprofessional position as well as cut hours for other paraprofessionals from 7.5 hours a day to six hours a day to save $180,000.

The superintendent told the board that she does not like the idea of cutting teachers because every position eliminated increases class sizes for students.

She said, “Every time we cut a teacher, it directly impacts the front line.”

The proposed 2012-13 budget is $99.6 million with revenues of $94.8 million.

In the proposed budget, the district is allowed by law to raise its property tax rate by 5.71 mills. If the board enacts that maximum tax hike, that would only bring in about $2.95 million.

The property tax rate is 105.6 mills.
