Former Sen. Specter released from hospital

PHILADELPHIA — Arlen Specter, a former U.S. senator and Hodgkin’s disease survivor, is battling non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Specter’s son’s law firm says the former senator from Pennsylvania was released today from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

The 82-year-old Specter announced last week that he had again been diagnosed with cancer, calling it “another battle I intend to win.”

Specter’s 30-year career ended in 2010 after he switched from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party and lost the spring primary.

The statement says Specter is expected to return to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for additional treatments.

Specter has overcome two bouts with Hodgkin’s disease since 2005 and also survived a brain tumor.
