Wine, liquor sales plan still lacks support in Pa. Senate
HARRISBURG — The latest Senate Republican plan to allow the private sale of wine and liquor in Pennsylvania is still lacking enough support to pass.
Republican senators said no vote was expected before Friday afternoon. Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi has spent days trying to develop a plan that can win the 26 Senate votes necessary to pass a bill, which is a top priority of Gov. Tom Corbett.
The plan is similar to an existing Senate bill. It would maintain state ownership of the profitable wine and liquor wholesale operation and allow Pennsylvania’s 1,100 beer distributors to also sell wine and liquor.
But it would scale back the number of potential new liquor outlets, allow some groceries to sell wine and beer and push state stores to shut down under certain conditions.
