Man accused of abusing girlfriend's daughter

14-month-old had large bruises

BUTLER TWP — A township man faces felony assault and other charges after police determined he was responsible for body and leg injuries to his girlfriend's infant daughter.

Jaime J. Rivera, 26, is scheduled to appear Nov. 7 before District Judge Kevin O'Donnell after being arrested Monday by Butler Township police on charges of aggravated assault and child endangerment, both felonies, and simple assault and reckless endangerment, both misdemeanors. He is also charged with a summary count of harassment.

He is free on $25,000 unsecured bail.

Authorities said the charges stem from an investigation that began July 26 when police were notified of a suspected case of child abuse. The victim, then 14 months old, was reported to be under treatment at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh.

The infant's injuries included “multiple, large and substantial bruises” on both sides of her chest in the area under the arms and on her back and left thigh, police said.

The child's treating physician advised police that the injuries were “highly concerning for child abuse,” investigators said.

Rivera told detectives the girl's injuries were due to an accident that occurred the night of July 25, according to police reports. He told investigators the child was playing in his bedroom and he was lying on the bed.

“He then heard a crash,” according to charging documents, “and got up and looked (at) his work bag — which was full of tools (and) on the victim on the floor beside a fallen chair.”

The defendant claimed he tried unsuccessfully to awaken his girlfriend, the child's mother, before he cuddled the infant and went back to sleep with her.

A detective spoke to the girl's 26-year-old mother. The woman reported seeing bruising on her daughter the next morning, but told authorities she had not seen bruises the previous day.

On July 25, she took the infant to Children's Hospital.

Investigators, meanwhile, photographed Rivera's room, the tool bag and the 21-inch high night stand from which the bag supposedly fell. Those photos were shared with the infant's physician.

The doctor concluded the injuries were not consistent with Rivera's account, police said.

Online court records did not list an attorney for the defendant, and he could not be reached for comment.
