Teachers
Please people haven't we debated this subject enough? When you go to college to become a teacher, lawyer, doctor, engineer, technical writer, computer programmer, etc. you have a very good idea what the job entails including salary and hours you will have to spend doing your job. You also know that "most" careers require continuing education. It's not a surprise after you graduate from college what you can expect.
Are there "some" teachers not making enough...absolutely.
Are there "some" teachers making too much...absolutely.
Did they know what they would be making in 5, 10, 20 years...absolutely.
Are "some" teachers worth so much more than we can ever pay them....absolutely.
Are "some" teachers worthless...absolutely.
It's no different than any other profession out there. I don't understand why teachers are always complaining that they are not making enough. Sure like I said "some" are worth more than we can ever pay them, but until public school teachers are paid by funds other than the taxpayers money they will NEVER make huge dollars period.
I had some very good teachers and some very horrible teachers. Every profession has people who excel at their job and ones who squeak by yet really stink at their job. Some professions may not be as protected by their unions like our public school teachers, but that's just how it goes.
Should they be allowed to strike...absolutely NOT
Can they legally strike....absolutely.
I don't think that will change in PA for a while. Although PA is only one of 13 States where it is still legal for teachers to strike, PA is also one of the slowest States to take action. It is VERY political whether you believe that or not.
Regardless, yes we have underpaid and over paid teachers.
We have underpaid and overpaid professionals in all walks of life!
I don't think until you can find a way to fund public school teachers withOUT taxpayer dollars are you ever going to solve the issues of their pay. Education has HUGE issues and don't even fall under what is being paid to the teachers. NO I am not a teacher or a spouse of one. I have a long family history with MANY relatives who are. Do I think the structure needs to change....absolutely.
Do I have the answers...absolutely NOT.
Good luck on this debate!
