Prosecutor withdraws 2 of 7 charges in child rape case

The Butler County District attorney’s office Monday withdrew two of the seven charges against a 20-year-old man who allegedly raped a child.

“The charges we’re moving forward with clearly reflect what unfolded,” said Assistant District Attorney Benjamin Simon.

Michael Kopp, 20, of Butler, appeared alongside family members at a preliminary hearing Monday afternoon before District Judge William Fullerton. He is free on a nonmonetary bond with the conditions that he does not contact the victim or have unsupervised contact with minors.

Kopp, represented by attorney Michael Zunder, waived his right to a preliminary hearing, related to his alleged raping of a 12-year-old girl.

Regardless, Simon withdrew two charges against Kopp, those being felonies of involuntary deviant sex with a child and sexual assault.

Kopp is still charged with two felony counts of raping a child, as well as two other felonies and one misdemeanor related to sexual offenses.

According to charging documents, the girl told police she was sexually abused by Kopp beginning in 2018, and it included multiple sexual and lewd encounters.

A formal arraignment is scheduled Oct. 5 in Butler County Court of Common Pleas.
