Butler Cultural District to reveal mosaic for The Penn Theater exterior
Butler Cultural District, a project of Butler Rotary Club PM, is set to reveal a community mosaic for the exterior wall of The Penn Theater created during the Steeples & Stacks Heritage Weekend event in July.
According to a release by the club, the reveal will take place during Butler Downtown’s Foodie Friday event, 6 p.m. Friday. The event will feature brief comments from the club, The Penn Theater, Experience Butler County and sponsor Belleville International.
The five-panel, 5-by-12-foot mosaic depicts an oil derrick, a ladle pouring molten steel, a Pullman railcar and Belleville International’s flange washers.
The mosaic was created by artist Carrie Strope alongside the Rotary club and “many interested artists and friends” who worked to break the glass, lay pieces into the design, grout it and polish it.
Troy Jay Construction mounted the mosaic on the theater’s wall.
Besides Belleville International’s sponsorship, the mosaic was funded by a grant from Pennsylvania Creative Industries, powered by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency and the National Endowment for the Arts.
A special dedication and reception for placement of a permanent marker will be held in late September preceding a Penn Theater show.
The Cultural District is in its final year of a four-year Creative Communities grant and is being considered for the five-year Creative Districts program.
