HARRISBURG — Slot-machine revenue at Pennsylvania casinos fell 3.6 percent in April.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board said Friday that Pennsylvania's 12 casinos took in about $198 million from slots last month, down about $7 million from the year-ago period.

Including only the 11 casinos that were also open in April 2013, revenue fell 4.6 percent.

Slots revenue fell at 10 of the 11 casinos, with Hollywood Casino down the most at 10 percent. The only casino in positive territory was Valley Forge Casino Resort, up 20 percent.

The state's April tax haul from slot machines was $106 million.

PITTSBURGH — The bacteria that causes Legionnaire's disease has been found in ice machines at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's flagship hospital, where officials say one patient died and two were sickened by the bug late last year.Tami Minnier, the hospital chain's chief quality officer, said officials at UPMC Presbyterian hospital initially were stumped when tests of the hospital's water system were negative for Legionella, a Pittsburgh newspaper first reported Friday. The bacteria, which causes a potentially lethal strain of pneumonia, typically develops in warmer water.But officials reviewed the dead patient's medical records and found he had been restricted to eating ice chips and had inhaled a chip into his lung. Hospital officials then found the bacteria in some of its ice machines, Minnier said.As a result of the findings, about 500 ice machines in UPMC's 20 hospitals as well as four nursing facilities were being sterilized and equipped with filters.

HARRISBURG — The leading sponsors of medical marijuana legislation say Gov. Tom Corbett didn't go far enough when he said he'd support the legalization of a marijuana extract to treat severe seizures in children.Sens. Daylin Leach and Mike Folmer wrote to Corbett on Friday to say they want to work with him on medical marijuana legislation that would help people, including adults, treat a wider range of illnesses. Corbett said Friday that he knows some people would like to see it broadly available, but his proposal is where he is willing to go.Even that may have trouble passing the state House.A spokesman for leaders of the House's Republican majority says they're concerned that federal law prohibits it and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration hasn't approved it.

MONROEVILLE — The mother of a 6-year-old boy who brought a loaded .45-caliber handgun to school has told police that unspecified “drug dealers” were in her apartment near the boy's backpack the night before.Monroeville police have charged the woman, 32-year-old Stephanie Lynn Roth, with endangerment and drug paraphernalia charges.Police Chief Doug Dole says the boy turned over the gun after bringing it to Ramsey Elementary School in his backpack Wednesday morning. The weapon was quickly taken from him and nobody was hurt.Police believe the boy didn't realize the gun was in the backpack until he arrived at school.
