Spring cleaning is coming to downtown Butler.

On Saturday April 22, the Tree Shade Commission is coordinating the annual Big Spring Clean event, where volunteers spend a day cleaning Main Street in downtown Butler.

“The community really comes together for the day and helps clean up,” said Thomas Graham, president of Butler Downtown. “It's a great day for volunteers to come out. It's like spring cleaning.”

Butler Downtown is a of non-profit organization that seeks to improve the downtown area by working with other groups, the city and volunteers in the community.

“We look for 50 to 75 volunteers,” Graham said. “Each year we get different church groups and youth groups. Depending on the political campaign season, we'll have people running for office come down in their campaign T-shirts.”

Graham said the Tree Shade Commission puts on two big cleaning events every year in downtown Butler. Volunteers roam the streets picking up trash, weeding around trees, mulching and cleaning ashtrays and garbage cans.

This spring, volunteers will be planting some foliage to liven up the street, said Bob Dandoy, former president of Butler Downtown.

Volunteers are welcome to bring rakes, brooms and any other cleaning spplies, though the Tree Shade Commission will provide equipment for those who need it, said Dandoy.

Pedestrians and businesses can expect to soon see advertising flyers looking for volunteers to help.

“It's a great day for volunteers to come out,” Graham said.

Volunteers are encouraged to register, though it is not required.

The weekend after the Clean, the Butler Downtown Entrepreneur, New Business and Developer Tour is scheduled to show potential Butler business owners what the city has to offer.

Dandoy said he hopes the Clean will showcase the city at its best.
