HARRISBURG — A state senator is pressing his bill to overhaul Pennsylvania's pension system for state and public school employees since a competing House bill is stalled.

Lancaster County Sen. Michael Brubaker said Friday he'll ask Senate GOP leaders to advance his bill.

Brubaker's bill would convert the traditional pension system into a 401(k)-style system. Democrats oppose it and Senate Republican leaders aren't committing to holding a vote on it.

Meanwhile, House Republican leaders are struggling to win enough votes to pass a bill that Gov. Tom Corbett backs. That bill would combine a limited pension with a 401(k)-style plan that provides a smaller benefit.

The fiscal year ends June 30 and Corbett insists that lawmakers pass pension legislation before they head home for the summer.

PHILADELPHIA — President Barack Obama said Friday he intends to nominate four people, including a former Pennsylvania attorney general, to serve as federal judges in eastern Pennsylvania.The White House said attorneys Wendy Beetlestone, Mark Kearney, Joseph Leeson Jr., and Gerald Pappert will be nominated to serve on U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Pappert was Pennsylvania's attorney general from 2003 to 2005.Beetlestone is a shareholder at Hangley Aronchick Segal Pudlin & Schiller and formerly served as the Philadelphia school district's general counsel. Kearney is a shareholder at Elliott Greenleaf & Siedzikowski in Blue Bell. Leeson is a partner at Leeson, Leeson & Leeson in Bethlehem.The nominees require Senate confirmation.

HARRISBURG — A new report says Pennsylvania’s child abuse hotline received more reports of neglect in 2013 than previous years, but fewer cases were confirmed by authorities.The Department of Public Welfare report released Friday says there were 26,944 reports of suspected abuse or neglect last year. That’s 280 more than in 2012. There were also 38 child fatalities in 2013, up five from the previous year.Sexual abuse was involved in 53 percent of all confirmed reports, and 80 percent of those victims were girls.A total of 3,425 cases were confirmed by authorities, or about 13 percent of all reports. That’s 140 fewer confirmations than in 2012. A total of 3,280 children were listed as abuse victims, and some of those were involved in more than one incident.
