Get some exercise while getting color blasted
Along a 5-kilometer fun run Saturday, Aug. 15, there will be seven color stations where participants can decorate themselves.
The Harmony Color Blast Fun Run will take place for its third year, beginning at Sippel Reservoir Park. Susie Altemus, a member of the Harmony Parks Board, said the event has become a popular fun run — or walk — for the borough, which helps the parks department raise money for park upkeep and programs.
And along the way, participants of the Color Blast get a good sampling of Harmony Trail, Sippel Reservoir Park and their features.
“We wanted to take advantage of the Harmony Trail. A lot of people have not been on it, and now that it’s connected to Sippel Reservoir, it makes a nice connection,” Altemus said. “You go down a boardwalk … up by Indian Brave Campground, there’s some asphalt, and you hit the Sippel part of it and it’s real fine gravel.
“That's part of the fun of it, it gives you a little bit of everything.”
The course covers 1.5 miles, which participants go down and back, where they will be showered from head to toe in a vibrant array of colored powder.
Following the fun run, the festivities will continue with a colored-powder toss dance party — a highlight of the event for many people, according to Altemus.
So the finish line of the race doesn’t signify the end of the fun, because Altemus said there will be some food trucks and other activities at Sippel park until around 1 p.m.
Altemus said about 125 people participated in last year’s Color Blast, and the parks board is hoping to top that number this year. She added that fundraisers like the Color Blast are important to maintaining the parks in the borough.
“It covers the trails, the parks and the canoe launch,” Altemus said. “People don’t realize that all of that is through fundraising. It all has to be covered by volunteer work, not the borough.”
Registration for the Color Blast, which includes color packets, is $25. The fun run start will be at 10 a.m. at Sippel Reservoir Park, 400 Reservoir Park Drive in Harmony.
