Men get NCAA soccer berth
The Slippery Rock University men’s soccer team will go where it has never gone before.
The NCAA Division II playoffs.
For the first time in the 70-plus-year history of the program, The Rock received a playoff berth Monday.
SRU (12-7-2) will play New York Tech (13-3-3) at 1 p.m. Friday in the opening round of the Northeast Regional at Dowling College in Oakdale, N.Y.
The Rock won its second PSAC title and first since 1974 with a 2-1 win Sunday at conference regular-season champion California (Pa.) University.
The 12 wins by SRU this season is the most since 1981.
Despite a 13-5-3 record and a PSAC championship, the Slippery Rock University women’s soccer team did not receive a berth in the 32-team NCAA tournament.West Chester (18-1-2) is the only PSAC school to earn a bid. It lost in the conference semifinals to Kutztown, who SRU downed 1-0 Sunday for the title.
