GROVE CITY — Julie Molloy just wants to play basketball.

The Grove City High School senior doesn't care where. Give her a hoop, a basketball and an opponent and she's ready to go.

She used the same philosophy when choosing a college where she can continue her career.

She chose Division I St. Bonaventure University, signing with the school last week.

"When I went for a visit, it was the place out of all of them that I liked the best," Molloy said. "I like the school, the coaches, the players. I felt at home."

American University, Loyola and Pitt-Johnstown also recruited Molloy, who can play as a point guard or as a shooting guard.

For Molloy, however, where she would be playing didn't matter as much as simply playing.

"I didn't have a set goal to play Division I," Molloy said. "I didn't really care where I played. I just knew I wanted to play basketball in college."

Molloy is a gym rat. In addition to playing for Grove City High School, where she has started since her freshman year, she also plays AAU basketball for Rock Solid during the summer.

Rock Solid has players from Butler, Mercer and Lawrence Counties on its roster and is coached by former SRU men's basketball coach Posey Rhoads.

The team plays as many as 50 games each summer.

"Posey Rhoads helps me a lot with my skills," Molloy said. "He's been helping me every summer since the sixth grade."

Molloy plays shooting guard for Rock Solid. In that position away from the ball, she has perfected a deadly jump shot from the perimeter.

She also is adept as slashing to the basket, using her speed, athleticism and 5-foot-9 height.

It's just some of the qualities that attracted Molloy to St. Bonaventure coach Jim Crowley.

"Julie is a solid athlete and a very good passer," Crowley said in a press release. "But her calling card is her jump shot. She played some point in high school, but in AAU, she played away from the ball and really shined. She understands how to play without the ball and how to get shots for her teammates and herself."

Grove City needs her to be a point guard, and last year in that role she averaged 14.2 points and 3.1 assists per game for the Eagles, who finished 15-9.

She also hit 45 3-pointers and shot 40 percent from behind the arc.

The Eagles will need her at the point again this season.

"That's where I can help the team," Molloy said. "I actually asked (Grove City High coach Roger Flynn) to move me, but I understand why I can't."

St. Bonaventure also was an easy choice for Molloy because former AAU teammate, Chere Marshall, is a freshman guard there.

Marshall played at Hickory High School against Molloy and also with her on Rock Solid.

The two are close friends. When Molloy made her visit to St. Bonaventure, she stayed with Marshall.

"When we would play each other, we would just kind of look at each other and laugh," Molloy said. "When the game started, it was all business, but after the game we would get together and talk. People probably looked at us weird for doing that, but, whatever."

Molloy hopes the two can draw more attentive looks with their play for the Bonnies in the coming seasons.

She feels a lot better going into her senior season in high school knowing where she will be playing in the future.

"That's why I wanted to commit early," Molloy said. "It will make things a lot easier now."
