SLIPPERY ROCK — New coach, new team, new result.

Glenville State (W.Va.) men's basketball coach Dwaine Osborne is in his first season at the helm and has nine first-year players.

In the same boat is Slippery Rock University, which started three freshmen, one sophomore and one senior and have 11 freshmen on its roster.

On Wednesday, the Pioneers showed their capabilities, using an 11-1 run in the first half and an 11-0 run early in the second half to pull away in an 83-63 victory at Morrow Field House for their first victory of the season.

The Pioneers (1-4) shot a sizzling 53.3 percent from the field and 43.8 from three-point range (9-of-16).

Ray McKeithan and Nick Dent scored 17 and 16 points, respectively, to lead the way while Keith DeVaughn and Anthony McKinnon each added 12 points

"Those four are capable of putting up great numbers," said Osborne. "And we had seven, seven and eight points from three other players.

"Hopefully, as the year goes on, we'll get better," Osborne added.

The Rock (1-3) shot only 34.4 percent from the floor and 1-11 from 3-point range, but did sink 20 of 24 free throws.

"We had four freshmen and one redshirt freshmen at one point on the floor," said SRU coach John Marhefka. "They're young, but that's no excuse. I'm more concerned with their effort."

Glenville State led 18-16 before Dent nailed a 3-pointer and Norman Mars added a basket to kick-start an 11-1 run to open up a 29-17 lead with 5:15 remaining.

SRU went 5:04 without a field goal and trailed 37-25 at halftime.

The Rock cut that deficit in half in a 20-second span when Brandon Thompson opened the second-half scoring with a basket and a technical foul was called on Dent.

Matt Hale sank both free throws, then Thompson stole the ball and drove the length of the court to score to make it 37-31.

But as quickly as The Rock crept closer, the Pioneers made their next surge, scoring the next 11 points and 15 of 17 to take a commanding 52-33 lead with 12:47 remaining.

Jamar Scales connected on a 3-point play and another score to pull SRU to 15, but consecutive treys by Dent opened the gap to 21 points and sent the Pioneers on their way.

"I told the guys there will not be any easy nights," said Marhefka. "But it's just four games. We have 23 to go.

"It can be a long season or a rewarding season or somewhere in the middle of the road. Time will tell."

The Rock received 17 points from Scales and 12 points from Thompson. They return to action Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip-off against East Stroudsburg.
