An Ellwood City man died of a medical condition Tuesday, which resulted in his car hitting a guardrail on Interstate 79.

The incident occurred at 6:52 p.m. outside the Zelienople exit and was dispatched as a vehicle accident with unknown injuries.

Harmony Fire District Deputy Chief Rob Reeb said the vehicle was heading northbound when it crossed the median and hit the guardrail, causing light damage to the vehicle.

Deputy Coroner John Hanovick said the 66-year-old driver died of natural causes, which precipitated the crash.

Hanovick said the Ellwood City man, whose identity was not released pending notification of the family, suffered a cardiac emergency and was taken to UPMC Passavant in Cranberry, where he was pronounced dead.

Reeb said emergency crews were on the scene for about 30 minutes.

Pennsylvania State Police, Cranberry EMS and the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company assisted at the scene.
