Candice Eyerman never was the kind of person who sought a lot of attention.

But her talent demands it.

The Seneca Valley High School graduate and senior guard for the Waynesburg College women's basketball team scored her 1,000th career point in a game against John Carroll University Nov. 19.

"It wasn't something I gave a lot of thought to during the off-season," Eyerman said of reaching the milestone. "But at the same time, I wanted to get it out of the way early this season because I didn't want to make a big deal out of it."

Eyerman currently is averaging 13.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.

She was thrown into the fire as a freshman in the 2002-03 season and delivered immediately.

Brought to Waynesburg to shoot the 3-pointer, she made good on 44 percent (104-of-235) of her 3-point attempts her freshman season.

"I was looking for a player to come in and make an impact right away, and I thought Candice could be that player," said Yellow Jackets coach Terry Acker.

"But even I didn't think she'd end up doing what she did."

What Eyerman did was lead the team in scoring her freshman (14.3 points per game), sophomore (12.1) and junior (12.5) campaigns.

What did elude Waynesburg in that span was team success.

Over the past three seasons, the Yellow Jackets have tallied an overall record of 33-41. The team was humbled by 1-9 marks in the Presidents' Athletic Conference in each of the last two seasons.

A lot of pressure was put on Eyerman. During her sophomore season, she was the only member of the team to average 10 points or more per game.

"Sometimes, I felt that if I didn't make the shots, we weren't going to win," said Eyerman.

But this season, Waynesburg has players to complement Eyerman's outside presence.

Junior guard Katie Lewandowski leads the squad with 16.9 points per game and junior forward Denise Kennedy is putting up 12.4 points.

"There's a lot less pressure on me to score points," said Eyerman. "Having Denise in the post has really helped out a lot."

The Yellow Jackets (5-4) open their PAC schedule by taking on Washington & Jefferson Jan. 4.

"With the personnel we have now, this season is the best opportunity we've had to succeed since I've been here," said Eyerman.

A big reason for that is because Eyerman is becoming a more complete player.

"When I first came here, all I did was shoot 3-pointers," she said. "But every year, it's gotten harder and harder for me to get open from outside. So, I'm working on putting the ball on the floor more and driving to the hoop."

That would suit Acker just fine, as Eyerman carries a career 79 percent performance from the free throw line.

"She's been a marked woman over the last few years because teams know she is so dangerous from the outside," said Acker. "She is trying to evolve her game."

Still, Eyerman's bread and butter remains the 3-point shot.

She is currently 31-of-75 for 41 percent from beyond the arc this season.

Eyerman is on pace to fall 20 3-pointers short of the Division III career record of 368, which was set by Clark (Mass.) College's Meegan Garrity from 1994-97.

Eyerman already holds school records for 3-pointers attempted (731) and 3-pointers made (293) in a career.

"It's a tribute to Candice and her dedication to the game," said Acker. "But records are of little concern to her. She's always been team first."

"I'd rather win games, no matter who is scoring the points," Eyerman said.
