AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Northwestern State and Bradley made history at The Palace.

They both pulled off upsets in the first round Friday, becoming the first pair of teams seeded 13th or worse to win in the same building since the NCAA tournament expanded to 16 teams per region in 1985.

No. 14-seeded Northwestern State started it off with a 64-63 victory over Iowa, and 13th-seeded Bradley closed Friday's action at the home of the NBA's Detroit Pistons with a 77-73 win over Kansas.

"When you are the higher-seeded team, no matter how much you talk about it, there's more pressure," Jayhawks coach Bill Self said.

In between the upsets, teams expected to win coasted to easy victories.

Sixth-seeded West Virginia beat 11th-seeded Southern Illinois 64-46 behind Kevin Pittsnogle's 18 points. Aaron Gray scored 17 points and Ronald Ramon had 16 — each on 6-of-6 shooting — to lead No. 5 Pittsburgh to a 79-64 win over 12th-seeded Kent State.

The Demons of the Southland Conference and Braves from the Missouri Valley Conference will get another chance to end seasons for big-conference schools, both representing the mighty Big East, which had a record eight teams receive bids.

Northwestern State (26-7) plays the Mountaineers (21-10) in the second round of the Atlanta Regional Sunday after Bradley (21-10) faces Pittsburgh (25-7) in the Oakland Regional.

It's difficult to imagine either game matching the finish from the opener of the four-game slate in suburban Detroit.

By now, millions have seen Jermaine Wallace's fadeaway 3-pointer that lifted the Demons to a stunning victory over third-seeded Iowa.

If the backboard wasn't clear, Wallace would've had to wait to see a replay of the swish seen 'round the nation because he fell below the baseline after hoisting the shot from the corner.

"I actually saw it go in through the back of the glass," Wallace said. "I can't believe this."

Neither could the Big Ten tournament champions, who blew a 17-point lead with 8:29 left and are going home after the first round for the second straight year.

Clifton Lee made four 3-pointers and a long jumper to pull Northwestern State within three twice, then Jermaine Spencer scored in the lane to make it 60-59 with 1:03 left.

Hawkeyes star Greg Brunner missed one of two free throws with 14.6 seconds left, setting up Wallace's game-winner.

"Games like this happen, I guess," Iowa senior guard Jeff Horner said. "It's just tough to end your career this way."

Will it end coach Steve Alford's seven-season stint with the Hawkeyes?

Some have speculated that the former Indiana star will take resigning Mike Davis' place at his alma mater.
