Rock splits home debut
J.D. Lowry drove in a pair of runs as the Slippery Rock University baseball team defeated Millersville 7-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Critchfield Park.
The Rock (11-6) lost the nightcap, 3-2.
In the first contest, SRU was outhit 6-4 but used a five-run first inning to take control. John Katich fanned five batters in five innings to pick up the win while Slippery Rock High graduate Scott Rice tossed two scoreless innings with two strikeouts in relief.
In Game 2, Colin Scott was charged with the loss, despite a complete-game effort. He struck out seven batters, walked one and allowed just one earned run.
Brittany Hahn fired a two-hitter and struck out nine batters to kick off The Rock's 10-2, 6-2 doubleheader sweep of visiting Bowie State Saturday.The Rock (11-7) received two hits and two RBI from Lindsay Rodgers, two singles and an RBI from Meghan McHenry, a double and RBI from Lisa Getgen and an single and RBI from Stacey Rhoades.In the second game, Alicia Dixon had a double and single, Courtney Conron a double and two RBI, Andrea Murdock a single and RBI and McHenry a double.
Kayla Blackburn and Ashley Michaux combined to record three victories Saturday to lead SRU to a 5-4 win over host Mercyhurst.The duo won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, and teamed up for the No. 1 doubles match. Erika McKenna won at No. 6 singles and the No. 3 doubles team of Lara Rizzi and Cristina Rhodes accounted for the other wins.The twosome followed up with wins in the same events in a 5-4 win over Charleston (W. Va.) Sunday.
SRU captured 13 first-place finishes Saturday in the SRUInvitational at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.Gerald Christian won the 100-meter (11.11 seconds) and 200-meter (22.67) dashes to lead the way.Andi Rose won the women's 100-meter high hurdles (14.51) to lead a 1-2-3-4 finish for The Rock. Butler graduate Jill Rekich (15.41) was second, Sunny Daugherty (15.63) third and Slippery Rock High grad Melissa Sopher (16.12) was fourth.Also, in the men's competition, Butler High grad John Strutt was second in the 800 (2:03.49).
