PITTSBURGH — Officials in Allegheny County are seeking millions of dollars from the state to help keep the county's crime laboratory operating.

A joint state Senate and House Democratic policy panel will hold a hearing Tuesday at the Allegheny County Courthouse on the funding problems.

Officials say the lab analyzes more than 19,000 pieces of evidence a year and gets money from state police but has had no funding from state lawmakers since 2011.

County executive Rich Fitzgerald wrote the governor in May that the county spends $4.65 million to operate the lab, a cost that he said “may not be able to be supported indefinitely.”

LANCASTER — Authorities say a 15-year-old boy died in a manure pit when a piece of farm machinery he was driving overturned, trapping him.Lancaster County Coroner Stephen Diamantoni said Jonas King of Leacock Township was operating a skid loader Saturday morning when it flipped into the pit on his family’s farm.Police say the boy was completely submerged in the pit when emergency personnel arrived shortly before 11 a.m. It took rescue crews more than an hour to retrieve his body.
