Edith ‘Gerry’ Shearer

Shearer

Edith “Gerry” Shearer, 83, of Butler, passed away Monday, Aug. 3, 2026, after a long and hard-fought battle with dementia, surrounded by family.

She was born in New Kensington on April 21, 1943, daughter of the late Edith Kelley and Zane Wilson.

She was a devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Over the years, Gerry, as she was called by her friends, spent her days working too hard, caring too deeply and worrying about the kinds of things that most people don’t think to worry about. She was the family first responder, always there when anyone needed help, whether it be a bag of groceries or a caring hand to hold.

Gerry spent a large portion of her free time traveling. She enjoyed trips in her RV with her husband of 64 years, Jack, and family to various historical sites or simply campsites for a weekend away from the house. As age and time constraints made travel more difficult, family was still most important to her. Holiday dinners were legendary, no matter how much sage was accidentally put into the stuffing or if a lump dared be found in her mashed potatoes. Grandchildren were loved beyond measure. Accomplishments were applauded and troubles were eased. She was always there.

As the years continued, quiet evenings were the next best thing, arguing more over the remote and which Western to watch, than anything else. She will be missed.

Aside from her husband, Jack Shearer; Gerry is survived by her children, Kim Shearer Policastro, John (Shannon) Shearer and Tim Shearer; grandchildren, Larry (Jackie) Gizienski Jr., Michael and Nicholas Policastro, John, Gabriel and Lauren Shearer, Noah Dunningham, Tim and Greg Shearer and Etienne Burnett; and great-grandchildren, Natalee Sweeney, Jaycenn Davis, Jensen Shearer, Simone Shearer-Henry, Izzabella Weber and Ermias Burnett. She is also survived by her brother, Bob Wilson.

SHEARER — All services for Edith “Gerry” Shearer, who died Monday, Aug. 3, 2026, will be held privately through SPENCER D. GEIBEL FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, 140 New Castle Road, Butler.
