COAL CENTER — A neighbor and his son, a municipal police officer, have been charged in the stabbing death of an elderly Western Pennsylvania woman.

Authorities in Washington County said David A. McClelland, 56, of Coal Center, was charged Friday with criminal homicide, conspiracy, burglary, robbery inflicting serious harm and theft in the death of Evelyn Stepko, 92, whose body was found last Monday in her Coal Center home.

His son, David J. McClelland, was charged early Saturday with criminal homicide, conspiracy, receiving stolen property, and aiding in a crime. Prosecutors said he is a police officer in Fayette County’s Washington Township and previously worked as a part-time police officer with Monongahela. Authorities gave his age as 36 but court documents listed him as 26 years old.

Both were arraigned early Saturday and taken to Washington County Correctional Facility without bail pending a preliminary hearing Wednesday.

District Attorney Steve Toprani said the older man had been cutting Stepko’s grass in recent years, and during that time she reported at least four burglaries dating back to August 2009.

“She had suspected the two men at one point,” Toprani said. “We believe they basically had unfettered access to this house.”

Authorities said investigators recovered more than $82,000 in cash from her home on Monday.

“She was from another era,” Toprani said. “She believed in keeping cash in her home.”

The prosecutor said neighbors reported that the victim was fearful after the burglaries, and he called her “a vibrant woman who met a deplorable death in her childhood home.”
