CRANBERRY TWP — Cranberry Township’s board of supervisors has voted unanimously to apply for a grant to fund a potential new traffic signal at the intersection of Freedom Road and Rolling Road.

The Commonwealth Financing Agency's Multimodal Transportation Fund grant would provide financial assistance for installation of the traffic signal.

With the planned additions, the township intends to improve traffic control and pedestrian safety at the intersection. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) features will also be incorporated.

As per the meeting agenda, the new traffic signal will tackle “sight-distance concerns” in the area, which will also help with residential development in the area.

Dan Santoro, Cranberry Township’s manager, said there are no pressing traffic needs, but its installation would help avoid any future issues.

“We think there’s a long-term need for a traffic signal there, so we’re going to try securing funding right now,” Santoro said.

He said it was too early to tell how much the traffic signal will cost but based on usual costs, he estimated at least $1 million.
