McCandless

Mark David McCandless, 61, of Butler, passed away Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026, following a short, but fierce and courageous battle with glioblastoma, in hospice care at the Sergeant Joseph George Kusick VA Community Living Center.

Born March 18, 1965, in Butler, he was the son of the late David Merritt McCandless and Janet Elaine Somerville McCandless Bowen.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and he loved his country.

Mark was a commercial truck driver, delivering home healthcare equipment and later heating fuel. He was most recently a driver for FedEx Freight.

He genuinely enjoyed home improvement projects, but he was especially proud of the landscaping at his home.

Mark is survived by his loving wife, Carol Ann Weber McCandless, whom he married Sept. 28, 1991; two children, Kristi Weber McCandless and her husband, Scott McCandless, of Columbus, Ohio, and David Edward McCandless and his wife, Karlie, of Jacksonville, Fla.; three grandchildren, Cole McCandless and his wife, Anna, of Upper Arlington, Ohio, Kiley Gayman and her husband, Jake, of Beavercreek, Ohio, and Luella McCandless, of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Barbara Jansen and her husband, Al, of Liberty Hill, Texas; and one niece, Holly Jansen, and one nephew, Sean Jansen, both of Liberty Hill, Texas. Mark’s family meant the world to him, and he was most looking forward to watching his newest granddaughter, Luella, grow up. His family will miss him dearly but take great comfort knowing he is now with Jesus.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Joyce Arlene McCandless.

The family commends the Butler VA Medical Center for their exemplary care, especially those who showed Mark such kindness and compassion to the end.

MCCANDLESS — A celebration of life for Mark David McCandless, who died Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026, will be held at a later date.

Inurnment will take place in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.

Arrangements were entrusted to the care of MARTIN FUNERAL HOME DOWNTOWN, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler.
