Man faces trial in assault case

He allegedly hit, choked girlfriend

A Penn Township man accused of kicking his girlfriend in the mouth, breaking two of her teeth and choking her during a weekend domestic dispute waived felony assault and other charges to court this week.

Daniel K. Hood, 46, who is in the Butler County Prison on $15,000 bond, gave up his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday before Distinct Judge Sue Haggerty of Saxonburg in waiving the charges.

Penn Township police arrested Hood following the altercation Saturday with his 49-year-old girlfriend at the couple's home at the Port-O-Call trailer park.

The victim told police that the defendant first assaulted her around 8 a.m. when he hit her on the head and body, according to charging documents.

She recounted that around noon the alleged assault resumed, with Hood kicking her in the face, knocking out her teeth. She accused him of punching her and choking her with his hands around her throat, police said.

She told police that she felt like she “was going to lose consciousness,” documents said, as he allegedly choked her.

The victim at some point managed to get out of the home and call for 911. She told a dispatcher that she escaped the house and was hiding on the property. Police Sgt. Cheryl Cranmer said she found the woman in a shed.

She was “distraught” and crying, Cranmer said of the victim, according to the officer's affidavit.

Two of the victim's lower teeth were broken and “protruding forward,” police said. She also had a lump on her forehead and blood in her hair. She did not seek hospital treatment for her injuries.

Police said they found Hood in the bedroom at the home — and intoxicated.

When Cranmer asked how his girlfriend suffered her injuries, according to the affidavit, the defendant said he “did it.”

Hood is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment and harassment.
