PITTSBURGH — Pennsylvania officials are warning consumers about bottled water they say is contaminated with total coliform and E. coli bacteria.

Officials said customers should not use three-, four- and five-gallon jugs of Tyler Mountain water that was bottled on April 17 and 18. The water is distributed by Pittsburgh-based Aqua Filter Fresh. A company spokesman said about 9,400 bottles were affected, but only half had been delivered to customers.

A state Department of Environmental Protection spokesman said the company’s ultraviolet disinfecting system was malfunctioning.

Aqua Filter Fresh issued a statement Saturday saying it notified consumers of the problem immediately. The company serves Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

E. coli can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches or other symptoms of illness.
