ADAMS TWP — If he had it his way, Carroll Smith would play defense.

The Clarion University football team couldn't agree more.

Smith, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound senior defensive back-wide receiver at Mars High School, recently signed a letter of intent to attend Clarion, where he will major in business.

The Golden Eagles plan to use him as a safety.

Smith considered many schools, including Slippery Rock University, Robert Morris, Indiana (Pa.) and California (Pa.).

"I really liked the atmosphere at Clarion and I felt comfortable there," said Smith, who will receive a partial scholarship. "I liked the coaching staff and they said that they have some big plans for me."

Smith was recruited by Clarion quarterbacks coach Chris Weibel.

The team's head coach, Jay Foster, said he was impressed with Smith's athletic ability.

"I saw him on tape and liked his size and speed, especially for the position we're going to play him at," Foster said. "I like the way he gets after it and hits people."

Smith garnered Tri-County North Conference honorable mention status on both offense and defense this season.

He caught only 12 passes last year as a wideout, but they went for 279 yards, a 23.2 yards-per-catch average, and three scores.

On defense, he totaled 40 solo tackles and intercepted four passes.

"I enjoy playing defense more than offense," Smith said. "It's a lot more exciting."

Smith has played football since eighth grade. He also played hockey his first two years of high school and plans to run track this spring for the second straight season.

He will be joining a Clarion program that hasn't had a winning season since 2002.

The Golden Eagles are 10-33 over the last four seasons, including 1-10 last year, Foster's first with the team.

"Coach Foster has a lot of high hopes for the program," Smith said. "He's excited about the recruits they have coming in and wants to make Clarion a powerhouse in the (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference).

Smith could play a role in the Golden Eagles' short-term fortunes.

"Absolutely. We're looking for Carroll to contribute as a freshman," said Foster. "We had one starter in the secondary who won't be coming back next year. There will definitely be some young guys who will see a lot of time on the field."
