Hansen sets Rock vaulting mark
Slippery Rock University sophomore Jennifer Hansen cleared a school-record 12 feet, 9½ inches in the pole vault Saturday at the IUP Open.
Hansen's vauilt earned her an automatic berth in the NCAA Division IInational championships May 24 to 26 in Charlotte, N.C.
The Rockdropped a 5-2 decision to Gannon in the third-place game of the Collegiate Water Polo Association's Western Division Championships at the University of Michigan.Sarah Sander and Heather Walbright scored goals for The Rock (7-15).
SRU (26-12, 11-5)heads into this weekend's four-game series against Shippensburg (22-15, 12-4) needing one win to clinch a spot in the PSACplayoffs.The Rock hosts Shippensburg for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday. The PSACTournament will be played May 2 to 5 at Critchfield Park.
The Rock split a doubleheader with California (Pa.)on Saturday, winning 5-2 and losing 8-3, to slip into fourth place in the PSACWest.SRU(22-18, 8-8) trails California and Edinboro, who are tied for second, by one game. The top three teams in each division advance to the PSACplayoffs May 3 to 5. The Rock blanked Millersville, 5-0, to finish third in the PSACChampionships. Saturday's win was a school-record 22nd of the season for SRU.SRU(22-5) anticipates receiving a bid to the NCAADivision IIEast Regional,.Kayla Blackburn and Ashley Hillborn won singles matches Saturday for SRU. The doubles tandems of Blackburn and Laura Handy, Ashley Greene and Hillborn, Lara Rizzi and Christina Rhodes also won.
