“To be, or not to be,” that is the question Shakespeare’s protagonist asks in “Hamlet.” But when it comes to seeing Shakespeare shows, most people ask themselves “to go or not to go?”

The Bard is the subject of scrutiny for numerous reasons. “Did he actually write all those plays?” “Was he even real?” “Was Shakespeare a woman?” All mysteries we cannot solve. Often those questions are followed by: “did they REALLY talk like that back then?”

In iambic pentameter? No. They did not.

What makes Shakespeare confusing is what also makes him great. To see his shows is to get three forms of art in one: poetry, theater and, often, music. It’s an experience like no other, and when done in the open air, it’s as close as you can get to seeing the shows in their original venue at the Globe Theatre.

I was not a fan of Shakespeare until I realized how dynamic and relatable his shows can be. There’s something for everyone in each of them. Also, you can pick up one of his plays and drop it in any scenario; it will still make sense.

Hobnob Theatre’s latest Shakespeare in the Park production “Two Gentlemen of Verona (PA)” does this by localizing an otherwise international setting. If you go, you’ll see familiar ephemera like Steelers jerseys, IC Light bottles, drumsticks and hockey sticks. By seeing what you know, you’ll probably understand the humor and laugh along.

So when asking yourself “to go, or not to go” this weekend, I hope you will go to Preston Park to see “Two Gentlemen of Verona (PA).” If not, please check out the other events listed below.

The Regatta at Moraine State Park, 225 Pleasant Valley Road in Muddy Creek Township, celebrates everything to do in nature, encompassing water and land recreational activities for the whole family! The second annual Celebrate the Lake event is happening at Glade Run Lake Park in Middlesex Township from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Hear the symphony clarinetists Allyson Huneycutt and Jorge Naranjo Osorio at noon Saturday in Diamond Park in Butler across from the courthouse, all for free during the Butler County Symphony’s summer concert series. The first ever Conno Community Day starts at noon Saturday at the Stables at Connoquenessing and Buttercup Campground, 856 Evans City Road in Connoquenessing Township.
