Samuel Boyd Wymer, 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 16, 2026, after living with pulmonary fibrosis. He was surrounded by the love of his devoted partner, Norma Walton, and his family.

Born on Feb. 2, 1944, and raised in Butler, Sam developed a lifelong passion for doo-wop and the music of the 1950s and 1960s. His knowledge of the era was remarkable. Music wasn’t just something he enjoyed — it was something he loved sharing with others.

Sam moved to Tucson, Ariz., attended the University of Arizona and had a career with the telephone company.

Retirement gave Sam the opportunity to devote even more of his time to the community he loved. He became a Master Gardener and volunteered at Tucson Botanical Gardens. His love of books led him to dedicate many years to Tucson Friends of the Library, where he was named Volunteer of the Year. He also volunteered with the Tucson Food Bank and Parents Without Partners, always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed.

Sam’s interests reflected his curiosity and enthusiasm for life. He enjoyed gardening, bicycling, cave exploring and genealogy. As a young man in Pennsylvania, he hosted his own radio program featuring the “Top 50s.” In retirement, he returned to the airwaves with a weekly program on Sun Sounds of Arizona, where he shared practical advice on saving money in everyday life. He also organized the organization’s annual beer festival fundraiser and remained active in the Arizona Cactus Club and the Tucson Iris Society.

Wherever Sam went, he made friends. He had a genuine gift for making people feel welcome.

He treated everyone with kindness, respect and sincerity. His generous spirit, quiet humility and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Above all, Sam loved his family, and they were the joy of his life. His love for his family was constant, unconditional and evident in the way he always showed up.

Sam is survived by his beloved partner, Norma Walton; his son, Jason Wymer; daughter-in-law, Carla Wymer, widow of his son, Shawn Wymer; 10 beloved grandchildren, including Kyndra Wymer and Alexi Wymer; three cherished great-grandchildren; brothers, Dan (Donna) Wymer and Randal (Jane) Wymer; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Wymer, M.D., and Lillian Gamble Wymer; his son, Shawn Wymer; his sisters, Martha (Nick) Lapcevic and Carolyn (Ronald) Stutz; and his brother, Jackson (Mary) Wymer.

Sam lived a life defined by kindness, service and love. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the community he faithfully served and the countless lives he touched simply by being himself. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.
