Two women, including the mother of a boy, died following a head-on crash Sunday, July 26, along Route 8 in Butler Township.

Jennifer N. Johns, 27, of Kittanning, and Brandi Novosel died of injuries sustained in the evening crash. Johns died at the scene, while Novosel, the mother, was taken to a hospital and died later from her injuries.

Butler Township police said Johns was driving a 2025 Buick Envista southbound at a high rate of speed when her vehicle veered into the opposite lane and struck a northbound 2017 Chevrolet Trax, driven by Novosel’s husband, Frank W. Novosel III.

The Novosels and their son were all taken to area medical facilities, where Brandi Novosel later died. Police did not specify where the Novosels were from or their ages.

The boy was transported to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

The crash was reported at 6:50 p.m. in the area of 170 Pittsburgh Road near West Central Equipment, according to Butler County Emergency Services dispatch records. Three medical helicopters were called to the crash.

State police, Butler Township police, Butler Township Volunteer Fire District, Butler Bureau of Fire, Butler Ambulance Service, StatMedEvac and Atwell’s Towing responded to the scene.
