Runner aches for 1 more shot at what summer offers
I spent the last warm sunny day of autumn pulling withered bean plants and tired tomato vines from my garden. One orange-red ball clung to a 5-foot leafy tether. I plucked it and popped it in my mouth. Sweet-spicy tomato juice squirted down my throat and dribbled down my chin.
Homegrown tomatoes are one of the best parts of summer, made that much sweeter because when summer's gone, they're gone. It's one of the bright things I miss in the dead gray cold of winter.
Just one more, I thought as I searched among the vines for another tomato. I'm not ready for summer to be done. As I piled the remaining plant refuse for composting and scattered winter rye on the bare garden, my list of "one mores" that I'm going to miss with the passing season grew longer.
• I want one more day to dash out the door like a kid to the playground — no need to warm up stiff muscles or preheat chilly air on my daily run.
• I want one more 13-ear dozen of Pennsylvania sweet corn from a self-serve farm stand. My favorite is butter and sugar, but I'll butter and salt any variety.
• I want to meander through Deer Lakes Park trails on one more long run with Lottie. We talk nonstop the whole time but can't remember anything we've said afterward.
• One more run when rain's a blessing, not a threat.
• I want to need sunscreen one more time on parts of my body other than my face.
• I want to concoct one more fresh red raspberry smoothie for breakfast.
• I want to cross-train once more by cranking out back road miles on my blue Jamis CodaSport.
• One more nap in the hammock after a hot summer run, glass of peach tea in one hand, book in the other, two dogs resting in the shade underneath.
• I want to wear my favorite blue sunglasses one more time. They don't bounce around or slide down when I sweat, and they look pretty cool, too.
• I want to skip through the surf in bare feet on one more Outer Banks vacation.
• I want to run one more time with the evening sun at my back and cast a shadow with 10-foot tall legs.
• I want to explore the trails in my woods with my dogs and stop for a juicy snack of wild blackberries.
• Just once more to circle the track, to push myself through one more interval, to pretend I'm fast.
• I want to feel light like a deer running in my shorts and sports bra instead of a lumbering bear under sweat clothes, hat and mittens.
• I want one more race like last weekend's Buffalo Creek Half Marathon. What could be better: a straight downhill course, cool morning sunshine, kicking through fall's finest colors on a soft path and a gathering of friends at the finish.
