Norman Eugene Shimmel, 66, of Butler passed away at 10:48 p.m. Friday at the VA Butler Healthcare.

He was born Aug. 2, 1943, in Tarentum, the son of the late Michael Shimmel and the late Clara (Green) Shimmel.

After graduating from Butler High School in 1961, he served in the U.S. Air Force for four years at several installations, both in the states and abroad, as a medical technologist.

After leaving the service, he worked at the University of Pittsburgh, Falk Clinic, assisting in hemophilia research. Later he worked for the Westinghouse Electric Corp. at its research and development center in Churchill.

He graduated from Butler County Community College with an associate degree in mathematics in 1976.

He worked for the Castle Rubber Co. for 17 years as a cost estimator, and as a manager, he introduced the use of computers and mathematical modeling for doing estimates. He later worked for the Custom Glass Corp. in Kittanning as an estimator and inside salesman. He also worked for the Armstrong Group of Companies as a computer operator in their data center. Later he worked at the Butler County Community College learning center.

He was a senior aide and computer consultant at the Lighthouse Foundation. He also did similar volunteer work for newly created Community Health Clinic. He previously served as member and officer for the Butler County Symphony Board of Directors. He had been a volunteer church organist.

His interests included his many pets, mathematics, music and computer programming.

Surviving are several cousins.
