EVANS CITY — After hearing from several concerned residents, borough council Monday night voted to advertise for a second full-time streets department employee.

The move came after numerous residents voiced concerns about both the safety of the streets employee and his ability to finish all the work needed in the borough.

“Do the right thing and move to hire a second streets employee and name Jack (Beers, current employee) the director,” Mark O'Connor urged.

Sarah Troyan also asked council to hire somebody to help Beers complete needed repair work. She said she continues to bottom out on an alley near her house and when she spoke with council about it, it was unable to take action other than to add it to an ever-growing to-do list.

“Every time somebody voices a concern, it's 'I'll a take a look at it,' (or) 'I understand,' ” she said. “But then nothing happens.”

The manpower issue seemed to her to be the problem. “How can we fix all the alleyways with only one person?” Troyan asked.

The new employee would both work on the streets and write needed reports for the borough to send to various state agencies. The borough solicitor said she would write a job description to be approved by council and advertised on online job sites.

Second only to the desire for a second streets employee, Evans City residents raised the issue of borough council meeting times. Council meets the first Monday of every month at 6 p.m., a time some said limited potential attendance.“If you want younger people to get involved, you have to make it accessible to younger people” with full-time jobs, Troyan said.She was not alone in that desire, as several others in attendance raised the concern.“There is an implication that you do not want residents to be here to watch the meetings or to speak,” Joanne Ramsden said, telling council she wanted the meetings moved to 7 p.m.While council took several other actions Monday night, no moves were made to change the meeting time.
