Elizabeth A. Johnson, 76, of Gibsonia passed away Tuesday at UPMC Presbyterian hospital leaving her earthly home surrounded by her loving husband and children.

Born April 25, 1934, in Rockford, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Dr. Dale and Mary (Snyder) Scott of Sterling, Ill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Scott.

Betty was a registered nurse graduate of Northwestern University, working at Wesley Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Ill.

In 1978, she began volunteering at Contact Pittsburgh, a crisis intervention hot line, where she soon became director of volunteer services and ultimately acting director. She was acting director on Sept. 11, 2001, when Contact Pittsburgh received the contract to answer the Pittsburgh rumor hot line during the Sept. 11 terrorist crisis.

In 1993, she returned to school attending the Community College of Allegheny County and received a degree in volunteer management.

For her years of volunteer service, she received the Pittsburgh Post Gazette's Jefferson Award in 2003.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Raymond E. Johnson; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Barbara Johnson of Burnsville, Minn.; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and John Johnston of Beaver; a beloved granddaughter, Sydney Rae Johnston of Beaver; and three cousins, Carole (Larry) Brooker, Janice (Jean-Pierre) Golay and Jane Dusek.

<B>JOHNSON</B> — Memorial services for Elizabeth A. Johnson, who died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church of Bakerstown, Route 8 at Heckert Road, Bakerstown.
