ERIE — A baby sitter has been ordered to stand trial on charges of involuntary manslaughter in the drowning deaths of two toddlers.
A district judge ordered 20-year-old Brittany Steward held for trial at a preliminary hearing in Erie County on Monday.
The charges were refiled by the district attorney's office after another judge dismissed them in March, saying there was insufficient evidence.
Steward will also be tried for endangering the welfare of a child and recklessly endangering another person.
Police say Steward was sleeping after a night of drinking when her 20-month-old half sister, Jenna Walker, and Walker's friend, 2-year-old Maggie Kovski, wandered from a Waterford house and drowned in a backyard pond.
PHILADELPHIA — Authorities are looking for the driver of a vehicle that struck and injured a Pennsylvania state trooper — and kept on going.It happened on Sunday night along Interstate 95 in Northeast Philadelphia.Troop K Capt. David Young says Trooper Andrew Falcon was issuing a motorist a citation when a sport utility vehicle or van struck the trooper with what appeared to be the vehicle's mirror.The incident was caught on the trooper's dashboard camera.The woman he had pulled over was an emergency medical technician. She called 911 and remained with the trooper.Falcon was treated at a hospital for elbow bruises and a lumbar sprain.
PITTSBURGH — A power outage at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is to blame for the deaths of at least 15 fish.Zoo spokeswoman Connie George says the rainbow and brown trout died Sunday. The power at the facility went out at about 11:45 a.m. and backup generators were used.However, George said pumps that provide oxygen to the trout tank did not restart once regular power was restored.
