Study: Skilled workers lacking

Demand seen in tech, health

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania may not have enough skilled workers to fill growing demand over the next eight years, a study has found.

A study focused on workforce needs in Pennsylvania found that nearly 1 million skilled jobs will need to be filled across the state through 2024, with the greatest needs in health care, business and finance, and computer and mathematical occupations.

The problem, according to the study by the State System of Higher Education, is that “significant workforce gaps” could occur in many of those fields, meaning there won’t be enough educated workers to fill all the open positions.

The analysis looked at 445 skilled occupations through 2024, with a projected overall growth rate of 9.5 percent. Over that time skilled jobs are expected to grow at a rate of 10.9 percent, with jobs in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and health care projected to grow at an even faster rate of 15.6 percent.

By contrast, low-skilled jobs are expected to grow at a rate of 8.1 percent.

The study also found that shortages could occur in so-called “middle skill” jobs — those that generally require significant education and training beyond high school, but don’t require a bachelor’s degree. Those occupations include maintenance and repair workers, industrial machinery mechanics and computer-controlled machine tool operators

Frank T. Brogan, the chancellor of the State System of Higher Education, called the analysis “only one component of a larger resource base that the (system) and universities can use for program development, strategic planning, engagement with business, and support for current and prospective students.”

The system’s gap analysis looked at both statewide and regional markets. The statewide results were released Thursday, and regional findings will be available this fall,
