Miller Minutes: Discussing the themes of ‘The Odyssey’

“Giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles …”

This line from “The Princess Bride” encapsulates the pillars of a good story. It’s also a great description of “The Odyssey” by Homer. With Christopher Nolan’s attempt to bring this poem from page to screen premiering this week, I thought it would be fun to discuss.

In an “Alter Eagle” interview last year, I was asked what I would consider to be the greatest book of all time. I answered “The Odyssey,” because while it is a long, complex story with many characters and magical elements, its logline could be simplified to this: It’s just about some guy who wants to get home to his wife. Who wouldn’t be endeared by that?

Matt Damon is Hollywood’s go-to stranded man — his appearances in “Interstellar,” “The Martian” and “Saving Private Ryan” prove it. His performance as the titular character in “The Odyssey” should be nothing short of wonderful because of this, and leads me to my second point.

While “The Odyssey” can be intimidating, it is the originator of an age-old truth: There is no place like home. It’s where your family, friends and heart exist and provide comfort like nothing else can.

So, like Damon has many times before, I hope you find your way back home this weekend and attend some local events. There’s plenty to pull you all over the county’s four corners! And if you go through what’s listed here, maybe you can watch “The Odyssey” on the big screen.
