Lights get out of sync

Cranberry sees traffic delays

CRANBERRY TWP — A unique blend of circumstances caused significant traffic delays before noon Wednesday on Route 19.

Manager Jerry Andree said a power surge around 11 a.m. temporarily caused a traffic signal to flash at the intersection of Route 19 and Cranberry Square Drive.

In addition, a fire truck came through the area shortly after. The township has an automated system that changes all the lights on Route 19 to green to allow fire trucks to pass quickly.

However, the traffic signals were out of sync for about 10 minutes afterward as the computers with the lights worked to get back in their regular patterns.

Furthermore, Andree said a disabled car in the left turning lanes from Route 19 onto Route 228 caused more backups. A funeral procession also caused backups around the same time.

Traffic backed up from Route 228 all the way to Route 19’s intersection with Rowan Road.

Employees in the township’s traffic command center quickly worked on the problem and traffic resumed its normal pace just after 1 p.m.
