PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh officials promised beefed up security for last month's Pittsburgh Marathon, even though they couldn't say at the time how they planned to pay for it.

Now that's become clear.

Council has given preliminary OK to a measure to use $100,000 in federal grant money to pay for the extra security and police presence at the May 5 race. More than 500 city officers were on hand that day as security was beefed up in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings.

After the bombings, the Department of Homeland Security authorized cities to use some federal money to safeguard major events and that's what the council resolution aims to do. It must still be discussed by council next week and voted on again a week later.

ASPINWALL — The Pennsylvania Game Commission shot a wandering bear with a tranquilizer dart, but it ran across a busy highway and darted into the woods near a Pittsburgh suburb where it had eluded capture.Game officials had been searching for the bear since residents reported early Wednesday that it was wandering the streets of Aspinwall.The bear was first spotted at a marina and later walking on a sidewalk in the borough.Officials said they hoped to capture the bear and release it in a more suitable area, but it ran across Route 28 after being shot while in a tree, and headed into some nearby woods about 11 a.m.
