Rock soccer teams close on playoffs
Slippery Rock University's men's and women's soccer teams remained in contention for PSACplayoff berths by posting critical victories Wednesday.
Junior forward Jeremy Deighton scored two goals and freshman forward Kenneth Fultz had two assists as SRU's men defeated Lock Haven 3-1.
The Rock (13-4-1, 4-3) hiked its winning streak to eight games. Deighton has 14 goals on the season.
Freshman forward Patrick Conley scored SRU's other goal.
The Rock hosts California (Pa.) at 1 p.m. Saturday. A win puts SRUin the conference tournament.
Sophomore forward Ashley Paganie scored both goals in SRU's 2-1 women's soccer win at Lock Haven.
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for The Rock (12-5-1, 8-4-1). A win over California (Pa.) at 3 p.m. Saturday sends SRUto the PSACtournament for a sixth straight season.
Freshman Kaylee Smith recorded 18 kills, nine digs and an ace Tuesday in leading The Rock women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory at Gannon.All-region performers Jen Blasko and Anastasia Urbanik added 14 and 13 kills, respectively, for SRU(23-9, 4-6).Gannon (11-13, 2-8) won the first game 25-21 before The Rock reeled off wins of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-19.Urbanik added seven digs and an ace to her evening, while Marissa Balmert had eight kills and sophomore setters Anna Bixler and Kim Wilson had 28 and 26 assists, respectively.The Rock hosts Lake Erie College of Ohio at 7 p.m. Friday for Senior Recognition Night at Morrow Field House.SRU's volleyball team is ranked fifth in the Atlantic Region, one of five Rock teams ranked among the top regionally in their respective sports.The men's soccer team is ranked third, the women's cross country squad fourth, the men's cross country team fifth and the women's soccer team, seventh.
