PASSHE announces initiative to cover tuition for students who receive federal, state funds
Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education announced a new initiative to cover remaining tuition costs for in-state undergraduate students who receive federal and state grant funds.
According to a news release, in-state undergraduate students who receive a federal Pell Grant and PA State Grant would be considered eligible for the “PASSHE Pledge” and would pay no out-of-pocket tuition costs.
The initiative is set to begin in the fall of 2027. Fees, books, housing and meals are not included.
The system’s board of governors voted unanimously Thursday, July 9, to support the pledge. University presidents will coordinate with PASSHE Chancellor Christopher Fiorentino to finalize details on each university’s program.
Justin Zackal, Slippery Rock University’s associate director of marketing and communication, said the pledge advances the university’s mission of providing the highest quality education at the lowest possible cost.
“Slippery Rock University strongly supports this initiative to expand access to a college degree for more Pennsylvania families and help ensure that financial barriers do not stand in the way of opportunities,” he said. “The financial support will help more students enroll and continue their studies through graduation with less financial burden while preparing them for meaningful careers that strengthen our communities and workforce.”
The system will use preexisting programs at some universities that meet part of the pledge to help shape its pledge.
The system will also seek external support from donors. Additional information on the pledge is expected in the coming months.
