Miller, Lester near perfection on same night
Shelby Miller and Jon Lester might be the first MLB duo to ever threaten perfectin on the same night.
St. Louis Cardinals rookie Miller and Boston Red Sox left-hander Lester allowed just one hit and faced only 28 batters — no walks, hit batsmen or errors — in complete-game shutouts Friday night, the first time that has happened in the big leagues, according to STATS, whose database goes back to 1921.
Lester was perfect — 17 straight outs — until Toronto’s Maicer Izturis hit a two-out double in the sixth inning. Lester, who threw a no-hitter in 2008, then retired the final 10 batters in a 5-0 victory.
