On Wednesday, Wegmans Food Markets announced it obtained the building permit at the end of June and will start construction of a planned new store in Cranberry Township this July.

The announcement comes almost one year after the proposed 115,000-square-foot grocery center received final land development and conditional use approval from the township. The 13.2 acre store will be located at 5000 Cool Springs Drive.

“We plan to begin foundations on the building this month,” said Marcie Rivera, senior public relations coordinator for Wegmans in an email.

The timeline of the project is currently unclear, according to Rivera.

“As construction progresses, we’ll have a better idea of the timeline for the project overall,” she said.

The opening of the store is tentatively set for early in 2027, according to the township’s website.

“Anytime you have a large facility like that being constructed, there’s an immediate economic impact,” said Dan Santoro, township manager, referring to construction jobs. “But then there’s the permanent jobs.”

Around 400 to 500 new jobs are expected to be created at the supermarket, per a January 2025 Wegmans news release.

From a community perspective, Santoro said Wegmans will draw customers from broader market areas than other typical stores.

The opening of the store will mark the New York-based company’s entry into the Pittsburgh region.

Wegmans currently operates 114 stores across nine states, including 19 in Pennsylvania. The nearest locations to Butler County are currently in Erie and State College.
