Local women's choir to take stage at international competition

Greater Harmony Chorus qualified for Sweet Adelines International Competition and Convention in St. Louis. The 42-year-old group has never gone to international competition before and will participate from October 16 to 20.

WEXFORD — Greater Harmony Chorus, a Wexford chorus group comprised of about 60 members, will attend the 72nd Annual Sweet Adelines International Convention and Competition from October 16 to 20 in St. Louis.

This is the first international competition to which the group has been invited in its 42-year history.

Every year, Sweet Adelines International, of which Greater Harmony Chorus is a component, hosts an almost-week-long competition, according to Sweet Adelines President Patty Cobb Baker.

Choruses and quartets from all over the world participate in this competition of women, a cappella barbershop singers. To participate, choirs must qualify at a local or regional competition.

Greater Harmony came in second in its regional event, but qualified when the first place chorus decided to compete in a different division.

About 35 choruses in total will be in St. Louis for the event.

In addition to participating in regional competitions, Greater Harmony also puts on local performances throughout the community.

One of the upcoming performances the club has to fundraise is “A Night of A Capella” from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at The Oaks Theater in Oakmont. The night will include food, a cash bar, a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction. Regular tickets are $20, and VIP seating is $30.
