Mitchell

Helen J. Mitchell, 97, of Concordia of Cranberry, formerly of McKnight Village, Ross Township, died Monday at Concordia of Cranberry.

Born in Fort Thomas, Ky., July 2, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Charlotte Williams Jones. Helen grew up in Lakewood, Ohio, before moving to Ben Avon in 1924.

She was a member of the McKnight United Methodist Church and the women's association of the church. She was a member of the McKnight Village Women's Association, volunteered for Meals on Wheels for 23 years and served as judge of elections for 30 years. She also enjoyed gardening, bridge club, traveling and AARP.

She was a retired elementary school teacher from the Bethel Park School District. She was a 1936 graduate of the Indiana State Teachers College. Helen took her first elementary teaching job in Derry, Pa., making $900 a year.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Mitchell, who she married June 22, 1940, and who died Sept. 10, 1973.

Surviving are one son, Robert J. Mitchell and his wife, Shelley, of Saxonburg; one daughter, Catharine Schmidt and her husband, Michael, of the North Side, Pittsburgh; four grandchildren, Jeffery Mitchell, Kimberly Snyder, Peter Schmidt and Elizabeth Garvys; and five great-grandchildren.
