James R. Hayes
James R. Hayes, 87, of Asbury Heights, formerly of Cranberry Township, passed away peacefully on Friday.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Eva Hayes; his three children, Theresa (Robert) Crisanti, Janet (Tom) Huddleston and Jim (Belinda) Hayes. He was the beloved grandfather of Frank and Liza Crisanti, Drew and Grant Huddleston, and Liam Hayes. He also is survived by a sister, Mary Alice Vestal, and a brother, Donald J. Hayes.
Mr. Hayes was an Air Force veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
A 1949 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, he worked as a reporter for the Pittsburgh Press and wrote for many regional and national magazines, including Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, Pennsylvania Game News and the Pennsylvania Angler. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association and served on its board of directors.
Mr. Hayes organized the Cranberry Township Historical Society in 1988. He served as its president from 1989 to 1992 and then on its advisory board. In 1989, he received the Cranberry Township Citizen of the Year Award. He coauthored the History of Cranberry Township, published in 1991. His hobbies were fishing, hunting, gardening and historical research.
