Valencia man charged after allegedly hitting street signs, police car with ATV

A Valencia man is facing charges after police said he hit street signs, mailboxes and a responding officer’s police car with his ATV.

Shane Patrick McKinney, 29, was charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence, five misdemeanor counts of damaging property and associated summary charges following the June 1 incident.

According to Middlesex Township police, the department received a call reporting an ATV hitting a mailbox on Leslie Road.

Police en route to the scene spotted a stop sign that had been run over at the intersection of Leslie and Browns Hill roads. Police said they also spotted a speed limit sign that had been run over farther up Leslie Road.

The man whose mailbox he struck told police he saw the ATV travel past and return to his house five to 10 minutes later. He said he confronted McKinney — the driver — and a passenger about owing him a new mailbox while recording them, which caused them to flee.

The man shared the video with police.

Police said the ATV was later spotted at the intersection of Overbrook and Browns Hill roads. An officer attempted to stop the vehicle and it ran into the patrol car, police said.

Police said McKinney attempted to maneuver the ATV to flee but backed into a ditch. The vehicle eventually rolled onto its side, hitting and damaging the patrol car’s left front corner.

Police said they observed beer cans on the vehicle’s dashboard and could smell alcohol on both individuals. McKinney was given a field sobriety test, which police said he failed.

McKinney was taken to the Adams Township police station for a breath test. Police said he refused to answer whether he would take the test before eventually agreeing, but he ultimately refused again before the test was administered.

Middlesex Township police received more reports of damaged mailboxes on June 2. Police estimated the damage amounts to over $3,700.

According to police, the ATV also lacked registration, state inspection and insurance.

McKinney’s preliminary hearing has yet to be scheduled.
